Meeting the Challenge – Making the Case for NHS Health and Wellbeing Coaches: A Strategic Investment in Sustainable Healthcare

A Comprehensive Report for NHS Employers, ICBs, Neighbourhood Teams,
Clinical Directors & GPs
The NHS in general and primary care in particular, continues to experience complex and significant challenges, including a rise in chronic and long-term health conditions, an overburdened healthcare system, and increasing financial pressures.
Recent NHS structural changes related to changes to ICBs’ remit and the rise of place/neighbourhood teams and provider collaboratives have introduced further complexity.
As of March 2025, the NHS in England has outlined several priorities for primary care
to improve patient outcomes and system efficiency:
- Neighbourhood Health Service Models: Focus on preventing hospital admissions
and improving access to urgent care by providing care closer to home. - Digital Transformation: Embrace digital tools, including digitizing care records
and offering virtual consultations, to improve efficiency and accessibility. - Improved Access to Primary Care: Increase appointment availability, reduce
waiting times, and expand the workforce to meet demand. - Health and Social Care Integration: Enhance coordination between primary care
and social services for comprehensive patient care. - Addressing Health Inequalities: Ensure equitable access to care, especially for
underserved populations. - Prevention and Early Intervention: Focus on preventing chronic diseases and
offering early interventions, such as regular health check-ups for at-risk
individuals.
These priorities align with the NHS Long Term Plan’s emphasis on prevention,
personalised care, and community-based interventions.
To address these issues, Health and Wellbeing Coaches (HWBCs) within the NHS are
emerging as key contributors in improving patient outcomes, supporting chronic
condition management, and alleviating the burden on NHS services.
This report outlines the vital role of NHS HWBCs in supporting the NHS and the
critical support provided by the UK & International Health Coaching Association
(UKIHCA) in helping to enhance the quality of care, reduce costs, and improve
health outcomes.
Additionally, it discusses the potential cost savings, Return on Investment (ROI), and
evidence supporting the effectiveness of health coaching in various settings.
